After finding out that Clara signed a confession, made arrangements for restitution and returned all the property she had in her possession, she also has to repay her portion of the debt. My father hired a lawyer who informed him that threatening my clients was not “protecting the family”.
My mother began to call me at least once a week. I picked up about one out of three of her calls. Some of the times she cried during the calls and sometimes she apologised. I listened but no longer provided comfort.
I learned that forgiveness is not as simple as a vending machine where you put your guilt and get access. Several months later I received the final payment for the debt, which was 38742 pesos. There was no music or miracle associated with this, it was simply the final payment of my debt.
Clara wanted to meet as “sisters”. I told my attorney to inform Clara that there would be no meeting or contact and that our case was closed. On that day, I bought myself a basic timepiece with the money for the scratched bracelet that I had retrieved. I redecorated the guest room with a new desk, a warm lamp, green walls and a comfortable chair.
The guest room now feels like mine for the first time since I moved into my apartment. One day while grocery shopping I ran into Paola. She said, “This shouldn’t have gotten to this point.” I replied, “That seems to be the preferred excuse of those who want to keep travelling, but still enjoy the view.” I left.
Now I check my wallet before going to bed, not because I am fearful, but because I have respect for myself. My card is exactly where I put it. My door is completely locked. My business is doing very well. My phone no longer buzzes with fraud alerts at 3:12am.
