Surprisingly, my sisters didn’t know where to place their anger because Dad just broke the rules of the game as set forth by Mom.
At that point, Madison broke down in tears and said that she had already told her friends she was moving into a “beautiful” house.
I almost felt bad for her, but not quite.
“You can tell them the truth,” I said. The owner of the house said no when you attempted to move in without asking permission from your sister.
You were referred to as cruel by your Mother, selfish by your sister Brianna, dramatic by Chloe and heartless by Madison.
Karen very calmly reminded my sisters that they were being recorded by the security cameras with audio recording capability. The name-calling ended almost immediately after that revelation. Two hours after the insults ended, they departed the premises. They did not depart respectfully or quietly, but they did leave.
As time passed throughout that week my family started calling me because Mother had told everybody that I had thrown my sisters out of the house and put them on the street.
Therefore, I sent out pictures of their belongings that I had kept in my rooms, the video showing my Mother attempting to unlock a door with an old key, and the screenshot of Brianna calling me a “walking wallet.”
The phone calls ceased. The only person who still called me back was Aunt Denise.
When she did call, Aunt Denise said, “I’m sorry, honey. I didn’t realize they had already moved into your house.” I replied, “That was the purpose of their actions, so no one would know until it was too late.” Brianna found a roommate to share her new apartment because she learned that peace and quiet cost more than she realized.
Chloe moved into a smaller apartment and learned that it was not cheap to maintain a peaceful and quiet space.
Madison returned to Mother’s home where my parents actually realized that their adult daughters being supported in their homes was far less charming when it was on their same property. My Mother did not apologize for her actions towards me for several months after that final confrontation.
Finally, when she did finally apologize to me, she said, “I thought that you would help since you always do.” I responded, “There is a difference between helping and using a person to get what you want.”
The only time Dad visited me after that was during the fall and stood in the hallway awkwardly while I showed him the office that was created in the room that Madison had tried to take possession of.
The office had a desk next to the window, shelves lining the walls for storage, and had framed quotes on the walls above a lamp. The quote which had been framed said, “NO is a complete sentence.” Dad read it and nodded his head in agreement, saying, “That’s a good office.”
I replied, “It is because it belongs to me.” Since that day, my house has remained peaceful, all the guest rooms remain as guest rooms and not as an emergency shelter for entitlement.
The security cameras watch the front porch and no one has a spare key except for myself. My sisters viewed me as a walking wallet and my Mother viewed my house as a family resource.
However, the day before my sisters were going to move, I changed all the locks and once again learned something that will remain with me permanently. Just because a door is now permanently locked does not mean that it has become cruel.
